Travelling

Welcome to our presentation. We are going to tell you something about travelling. For example where you could stay, how to get there, about some popular cities and countries and even their sights. We will start with places where you can stay.

Where to stay
Before you go on holiday you have to think about where you would like to stay. There are many possibilities for staying. You can spend your holidays at a hotel, at a youth hostel, at a boarding house, but you can also rent a house or stay at a camp site.

First let's talk about
Camping
There are three different types of camping possibilities. Recreational Camping for people who want all the comforts of home, primitive camping facilities for those who enjoy closer contact with nature, and wilderness camping for those who love the adventure.
Now let's talk about

Staying at a hotel
is usually very expensive, but it's very comfortable.. You can book a single, a double or a family room at any travel agency or via internet. At a lot of hotels you can decide either to have full board or half board. Some hotels offer lots of free time activities and meals and drinks are included.

I would like to give you some information about
Staying at a boarding house
It's a bit cheaper than staying at a hotel, but you only get bed and breakfast there. It's very popular in Great Britain, but also in Austria.

I would like to talk about
Renting a house

Usually people rent a house when they stay for three weeks or more. If you don't mind cooking and cleaning in your holidays renting a house would be the right thing for you. It's very popular in Italy.

Now we will give you some information about

Staying at a youth hostel

Is a good possibility for teenagers, because it's quite cheap if you have a youth hostel card. Of course you must share the room with other people. In some countries, like in England, you have to do a little bit of cleaning in the morning. But you meet a lot of interesting people from all over the world.

Travel Tips

Now we would like to give you some information about the different possibilities of travelling.

Air Travel
is the fastest, the most comfortable and the most economical means of transportation. Many people go on holiday by plane. Sometimes an airline ticket is cheaper than the train ticket. In New York and some other parts of the world the distances are so far that you take the plane to get from one town to another. In Europe and the USA airports usually are not far away from the place where you live.

Trains
Going by train is less comfortable and not as fast as a plane, so not so many people go on holiday by train than by plane. But sitting in the train is more comfortable than driving. There are special offers for young people and families. There are stations in nearly every town.

Cars
Travelling by car is more practical than going on holiday by train. You just have to go to your garage, open the boot of the car, put in all your luggage and drive off. Another advantage is that you still can use your car at the place where you spend your holidays.

Hitchhiking
is the cheapest way of travelling, but you need a lot of luck and nice people who give you a lift. Some young people who haven't got a car and not much money choose this way of travelling. It can be dangerous, especially for girls.

Bicycles
Going on holiday by bike is also a very cheap way of travelling and it's healthy. But if you ride your bike for a long time you will get tired and cycling in bad weather is not nice at all.

Now we will tell you some facts about some popular holiday places.

Sydney is the largest and oldest city in Australia. Built around a natural harbour, it's one of the most beautiful cities in the world: There are lots of parks and from the many hills you have a marvellous view of the blue sea and the boats. "Let's go to the beach!" this is what most Australian families, living in Sydney, say to each other at least once a day during the summer holidays. Many families also own boats and often spend their weekends sailing. The most spectacular building in Sydney is the opera house, but there is also a concert hall, two theatres and a library.

Ayers Rock

Ayers Rock is called Uluru by the Aborigines who own the National Park. When you drive there, you will suddenly see the huge red rock rising from the ground. Uluru is about 350 metres high and it is possible to climb it. From the top there is a marvellous view. In the summer from December to February it is very hot and it's best to climb Uluru before
10.00 am or after 4.00 pm. Don't forget to bring water and to wear good shoes and a hat. For the Aborigines, Uluru is a holy place and the licking the toes is very important to them. That's why the owners of the place hope that tourists will not climb to the top.

There are huge crocodiles in the rivers, there are lots of different birds to watch, there are wonderful cave paintings, which may be more than 20 000 years old and there are waterfalls and pools to swim in. You may be lucky and see wonderful, multi-coloured parrots or the biggest cockatoo.

The Aborigines

Aborigines make up about 1.5per cent of Australia's Population. They came to Australia about 40.000 years ago They lives in small family groups, hunting and trying to find things to eat. But they are alas very careful to protect nature. When they took some honey from a bee's nest, for example, or fruit from a tree, they never took all of it.
Everything chanced in 1788, when the British took all the land for the English Crown. When white men wanted the Aborigines' land, they drove them off it. Aborigines were often hunted and killed by the white men, and lots of their children were taken away and given to white families as servants. Aborigines often fell they had lost their culture and lots of them became alcoholics.
From 1970s on, a lot of money was spent to give the Aborigines a better education and better health care, and some of their land was given back. Now the Aborigines own the famous Ayers Rock and Kakadu National Park and the land around these. The situation has become better, but there are still many problems to be solved.
There is a lot we could learn from the Aborigines. They have always lived in harmony with nature and they have always had a rich culture. Nowadays, there are paintings by Aboriginal artists in museums in Australiea, North America and Europe.
