Soccer--

Soccer, you can also call it football is the most popular ball-game in the world. Every team has 10 players and 1 goalkeeper. In Europe and South-America football is the most popular sport. In North-America, Asia and Africa football is becoming more popular. Since 1930 the best national teams try to win the world-cup-trophy. The first world champion was Uruguay and the best nation is Brazil with 4 titles, 2 second and 2 third positions. The best position for Austria was a 3rd place in 1954. Since the first participation of an African team for a world-cup quarterfinal in 1990 Africa is allowed to enter 2 teams for a world-cup. The team that reached the quarter- final was Cameroon. France won the last world-cup in 1998.

THE SYSTEMS: Football has developed from offensive to defensive. Until 1950 most teams played the 'WM'-system.
That means: 5 forwards in form of a 'W' and 5 full-backs in form of a 'M'. And since 1960 most teams play with 4 full-backs, 3 centres and 3 forwards.
The international associations: The international associations are the UEFA and the FIFA. UEFA is the abbreviation for Union of European-Football-Association. The UEFA is responsible for European-League and cup-games.

The 2nd association is the FIFA. FIFA is the abbreviation for Federation-International-Football-Association, it is the football-world association. It was founded in1904 in Basel and the committee is in Zurich.
Finances: Most teams sell their matches to TV-stations. In about 8 years the teams from Germany earns more than 5 billion Schilling and for this reason the team-budgets have increased, and the teams are able to buy players that cost more than 100 million öS.
The most expensive player in the world is Ronaldo, he came from Barcelona to Inter Mailand. The experts say that nobody will be more expensive than Ronaldo because many teams have economic problems.

The bad sides of football: The bad side of football are the disasters. Here are some examples:

1964 in Lima in Peru 350 people died.
1971 in the Glasgow Ibrox Park 66 fans died because of an broken railing.
1985 in Bradford 52 fans died because the grandstand burned down. Also in 1985 in Brussels 39 fans died.
The rules: The most important rules were layed down in 1894 and since that time there are only small changes.
The most important rule is the offside rule. I will try to explain it: When a player gets the ball, he is in offside when, in the moment that the ball is given to him no opponent is between him and the goalkeeper. But the rule doesn't count when an opponent plays the ball to him. In the own half the rule doesn't count too.
