1926 veranstaltete "The American Legion" und "Department of Alaska" einen Wettbewerb in Alaskas Schulen um eine Flagge zu entwerfen.
Der Entwurf von dem 13 jährigen Benny Benson setzte sich durch.
Er schrieb zu seinem Entwurf: "Das Blau soll den Himmel und die Staatsbkumem das Vergißmeinnicht darstellen. Der Nordstern soll die Zukunft und gleichzeitig die notlichste Region der USA darstellen. Das Sternbild soll einen Bären darstellen, der die Kraft Alaskas demonstriert.
Motto des Staates:
"North to the Futur" = "Im Norden liegt die Zukunft"
Lied der Staates (Flaggenlied):
Eight stars of gold on a field of blue
Alaslas flag. May mean to you
The blue of the sea, the evening sky,
The mountains lakes, and the flowers nearby;
The gold of the early sourdoughs dream;
The prezious gold of the hills ans streams;
The briliant stars in the northern sky,
The "Bear"- the "Dipper"- and, shining high,
The great North Star with its steady light,
Over land and sea a beacon bright.
Alaska´s flag-to Alaskans dear,
the simple flag of a last frontier.
