Bend it like Beckham

Jesminder Bhamra, called Jess for short, lives in Southall, London, a part of the town where many families of Indian origin reside. Her parents want her to be a nice, conventional Indian girl. They hope that she will go to law school, learn to cook the traditional Indian dishes and finally get married to a nice young Indian man. But Jess has other plans. She wants to play football like her hero, David Beckham. When she gets talent- spotted by Jules, she grabs the chance eto join the Hounslow Harriers, the local women's team. now she just has to keep it a secret of her family, which proves to be not exactly easy.

Chapter 1 (Page 5- 14)

- Jess Bhamra was in her bedroom, (that was full from posters of Beckham) dreaming about football.

- Her mum took her out of her dreams, reminding her that her sisters engagement party was tomorrow.

- Jess said about her sister that she\'s a very crazy person and she\'s marrying soon

- Pinky and Jess were shopping for the engagement party.


- They met Tony, a cousin from Jess.

- Played a short game together with some other guys. She was good and the boys didn\'t like that much.

- At home, Jess\'s mum wasn\'t happy that Jess played football in the park. she got a bad mood.

- The next day, the engagement party started. it was nice, how the house looked with all the lights outside.

- Jesminder was doing her job as the good helpful daughter...

- When she got questioned what man she wanted to marry, she gave no answer.

She doesn\'t want to marry until she\'s done something in her life.




Chapter 2 (Page 15- 20)

- Jess was playing football with the boys.

- A girl, called Jules, asked Jess if she doesn\'t want to come to a trial to thehounslow Harrier\'s girls\' side.


- Jess saw a chance in it.

- She met the coach on the pitch. She felt uncomfortable until she played.

- Jess was good and Joe wanted her to join the team.

- Jules told her about women that play professionally and she had sorrows how she shouls tell her parents about her new hobby.




Chapter 3 (Page 21- 28)

- Next day, Jess went to the pitch again to play football.

- She was ashamed by her scare on her leg, but Joe told her she should\'t worry.

- She met Tony and his friends again, and told him about the training.

- Her mum saw her together with the boys, she was angry and made a big discussion at home.

- She met Tony after that, to talk to a friend.

- Jules said Jess, she should tell her mum that she works in HMV (a supermarket), then she can play in the team without telling her parents.




Chapter 4 (Page 29- 33)

- Jess was lying to her parents. She didn\'t work at HMV, how she told them, she was playing football.


- She was getting better and better

- Her first match against Chiswick went good. They won.

- After a few days, her lies were routine for Jess. no one seemed to notice her secret.


A few weeks later:

- The girls made fun about Jess, when they heard that her parents doesn\'t know that she plays football and they made fun about the way of Indian marrying...

- Her mum wondered why Jess came home alone, Pinky wanted her to pick up at HMV.

- Is everything going to break trough now?




Capter 5 (Page 34- 41)

- Pinky was pissed of, but she shut up in front of her mum.

- Pinky asked Jess what was going on, and Jess told her.

- Poli, the seamstress came o the Bhamras to measure them for the Saris for the marriage

- Jess asked her mum for some money for new shoes.

- She met jules and they went on to buy some shoes.

- They bought some nice football shoes from Adidas for Jess. She was like in love with them. And then Jess bought some second hand loafers for the wedding.

- They went in a bar to drink somtething and talked a bit.

- When Jess came home her mum wanted to see the shoes. She was shocked by the first second hand ones, but when she opened the second box she burst into tears.

- She told Jules about the situation and Jules promised to help Jess because of the shoes.

- During the training, Jess got hurted and Joe looked at her foot.

- He told her about his feelings to his dad (he said he\'s a bastard).

- Jess felt that there was something wrong, when she was so close to Joe. she didn\'t feel uncomfortable, like with other guys...




Chapter 6 (Page 42- 48)

- In Jule's room, Jesminder was staring constantly at a picture of Jules and Joe

- She felt jealous, althoug she tried not to be

- Jules gave Jesminder some pair of her mum's shoes for Pinky's wedding

- Jules mum came home (Mrs. Paxton). She talked a bit with Jess

- When she heard that Jess plays football too, she was shocked and disappointed

- Jules brought Jess to the bus stop, and they had a lot of fun and laughed, about the face of Mrs. Paxton, hardly.

- At home, Jules was welcomed by a very strange mood, and by her family and the family of Teetu.

- They told the Bhamras, that they don't want to have a marriage between Pinky and Teetu

- Jules didn't understand what happened, until Teetu's family left the Bhamras house and Pinky told her what happened

- Suddenly Jess understood: Teetu's parents saw her and JULES at the bus stop, when the were joking and having fun and they thought that Jules is a boy

- Jess cleared up the situation but hen Pinky said her parents, that Jess was still playing football

- Jess got house- arrest and only came out of her room for meal

- She missed two training sessions at this time

- Suddenly Joe was standing in front of the Bhamra's house...




Chapter 7 (Page 49- 54)

- Jess was extremly nervous when Joe sat in the living room together with her parents

- She wondered what Joe wanted (asking why she wasn't at the training? or if Jules told him,that her parents didn't know that she was playing in the team?)

- It was the second point Joe wanted to clear.

- Mr Bhamra told Joe about his hobby, fast bowling, and that there was no chance in England for him to play this game. No club wanted him, an Indian with an turban.

- Mr. Bhamra didn\'t want ot see his daughter so disappointed like he was.

- Joe went away, there was no chance. He told Jess about an invitation to Germany for a game.

- Pinky helped Jess to get to Germany, both were lying to their parents.

- Jess was glad and impressend by the other land and city they were in.

- They played against the German team









Chapter 8 (Page 55- 59)


- short phone- call between Jess and her mum

- Jess didn\'t have clothes for the club

- Jules and Mel did a makeover with Jess, ignoring her protests

- Jess was dressed up sexy and wore make- up (tight skirt, shiny black top, with minuscule strips on the back, and high heeled shoes)

- Jess felt shy at first, but when Joe saw her she got a bit proud


In the club:


- Jess was nervous and drank wine

- Jules was flirting with Joe, and asked him to dance, but he said no.

- When Jess was a bit drunk, she began to flirt with Joe too


- Joe gave in, and danced with Jules

- Joe went to Jess (she stood at the other players), and asked her to dance with him and Jules

- Suddenly Jess felt sick and she turned to go outside

- Joe came with her, and helped her over to a nearby wall

- They talked a bit togehter, and went face to face to kiss each other


- Jules came out and saw them

- She called Jess a bitch and was really hurted.


Back in the hotel:

- Jules moved out, to spent the last night in Mel's room

- Jess knew that Jules was only so angry, because she didn't tell Jules the truth about her feelings about Joe

- Jules ignored Jess, on their whole way home


At home:

- Jess's parents were waiting togheter with Pinky, by the car, staring at her...


Chapter 9 (Page 60- 65)

- The Bahamras took Jess home, without talking to her. They ignored Jess constantly.

- Pinky told Jess, that they knew about her trip because they saw an article in the paper, with a picture.

- She talked with Pinky and told her about Joe.


- Pinky was scandalised.

- Jess went to the clubhouse to say Joe that she\'s off the team.


- Joe an Jess argued.

- Jess went to jules to talk with her, but she doesn\'t want to see Jess and doesn\'t want to talk to her.


- Jules was still angry.




Chapter 10 (Page 66- 73)

- Jess talked with Tony, about Joe and that she needed an Indian boy-friend.

- Jess was shocked, when Tony told her his secret... He was gay.

- Gay and Indian is like water and fire. It\'s not possible.

- Jess saw, that she wasn\'t the only person in this world who had problems.

- On Sunday was the semi- final. Pinky got out with her parents, so that Jess can go to the game.

- Jess was doing as if she had a cold. And when everyone was out of the house she ran to the game.


- She played bad on the first half.

- Joe told Jess and Jules that they should forget everything and be a team in the game.

- They did and were playing great, until Jess was called a Pakistani by a girl. She was angry and fouled her. Then she was sent out.

- After the game Joe and Jess argued, because Joe screamed at Jess.

- When Jess started to cry Joe hugged her... In this moment her father was standing behind her.




Chapter 11 (Page 74- 82)

- Jess and her Dad drove home in complete silence.

- At home there were Teetu and his parents, talking to Mrs Bhamra.

- They wanted the wedding between Pinky and Teetu, because Teetu was very sad, like Pinky too.

- They decided to do the wedding on 25th... This was the date of the final against QPR.

- A few days later Jules came to Jess house. She wanted Jess to come to the final to play, but Jess told her that she can\'t because of Pinkys wedding.


- But Jules didn\'t understand.

- The next day, they had the party one day before the ceremony and a lot of relatives were there.

- Bijii\' grandson was flirting with Jess, but she wasn\'t really impressed.

- Joe came to the house to tell Jess dad that a scout wanted to see his daughter but he sent him away.

- Joe thought that Jess is promised to a guy inside the house and he left the Bhamra\'s house.


- Jess was trapped.




Chapter 12 (Page 83- 90)

- It was a a great ceremony and Jess felt luck for her sister Pinky. But she wasn\'t really lucky by herself.

- At the party, her father saw her, how unhappy she was and he sent her to the final. He couldn\'t see his daughter with that face.

- Jess went to the final and did a great game.

- They won the cup and the scout wanted Jess AND Jules for the scholarship to Santa Clara in America.

- Jess was very happy, and got back to the party of her sister and she told her dad that they won the cup.

- During the Doli, Jules and her mum appeared at the Bhamras house.

- Mrs Paxton was screaming at Jess, and then she saw her shoes on Jess\'s feet and wanted her to take them off, in front of Jess relatives

- Mrs. Paxton thought that Jess and Jules were having a relationship and that they are lesbian, because she saw them celebrating. But she misunderstood the situation.

- Jules grabbed her mum and they drove off..

- The other began to celebrate the Doli again, because the didn\'t really understand what happened.

- before Pinky went away she asked Jess if she doesn\'t want such a wedding, too and Jess told her that she wanted more than that.

- Jess told Pinky, that she was at the final. Pinky asked Jess if she\'s sure that Mr Bhamra would let her go to America...




Chapter 13 (Page 91- 96)

- Wedding was over and Jesminder's family was sitting in the living room (still wondering about Mrs Paxton, Jule's Mom)

- Tony wants to help Jesminder, asked for blessings and an engage between him and Jesminder, with one condition: Jesminder can go to college anywhere she wants.

- Jesminder cleared up the Situation, telling everyone about the final game and about the american scout

- Mr Bhamra told his wife, why he let go Jesminder to that game, and said that jess is a great player


(he's proud !!!)

- Jess\'s Mum resigned, and she gave Jess her Ok for America

- Jess told her great news to Joe, and she told him, that she couldn\'t tell her parents, the thing between her and him, too.


At the airport:


- Jess said goodbye to her family

- Suddenly Joe came in there. He told Jess about his job... They offered him

a job as coach at the men\'s side, but he turned them down. He wanted to coach the girl\'s side, full time.

- When they said goodbye, Jules felt what her sister said her :When you\'re in love, you\'ll do anything just to be with that person... She knew now, he is that person.

- At the VIP passport control, Jess and Jules saw the Beckhams

- Happy (and in love) Jess and Jules started into their future...
